A merchant account is an industry term when a merchant and a bank, Independent Service Organization (ISO) or Merchant Service Provider (MSP) have contracted to accept credit card payments.

In basic terms, a merchant account an account that gives a business owner the ability to accept credit or debit cards as payment for his products or services. In our high tech society, cash is becoming used less and less with credit/debit cards becoming the "norm" for payment. Merchants can accept cards at a retail location, online, over the phone, and/or through the mail.
