Different kinds of Merchant Accounts
There are 3 main types of Merchants Account. It is important to know which one (or a combination of choices) you will need when talking with a Merchant Account Provider.
Retail Merchant Account
This is when the payment is made at the location of the purchase. (Point of sale, POS). In this case, the credit or debit card is physically swiped on a credit card terminal. You’ve seen these in every store you go to. It’s the little electronic box that you or they swipe your cards through.
Mail Order or Telephone (MOTO) Merchant Account
This is when the payment is either made over the phone by reading out the credit or debit card information, or if a form is mailed to the merchant with the card information included. In this type of account, the merchant enters in the credit or debit card number, expiration date etc. into either the Merchant Account Providers terminal software (Gateway) or on the Provider’s website. This account type involves the merchant only having the card info and entering it for the customer without the physical card.
Internet/Online Merchant Account
This account is similar to Mail/Telephone accounts accept the customer enters their credit or debit card information on the Merchants website directly. In this account, the Merchant hosts the payment gateway on their website for the customers to directly make a transaction.
